I
am most grateful for the kind invitation extended to me to address this
gathering tonight. For me it is a great honour and, in many ways, like
coming to Rome to plead my cause, as I shall shortly seek to make apparent.
What
I shall seek to say is an amalgam of several sources and types of data.
In
the first instance, it is a highly personal and idiosyncratic statement
of experience.. in the second, corroboratory evidence from others, dependent
and independent, where it was possible to test the positivist scientific
nature in support of certain aspects of my story. In the fourth, results
of an established frame of reference. In the fifth, some results obtained
by the application of information thus acquired.
The
key to the whole story at the beginning was the dowsing experience, which
I state at the outset to be valid. Where I am the only witness to events
and phenomena, I have attempted to the best of my ability to observe and
record them faithfully.
For
the story I will thus try to communicate may be called the 'Quest for
the Holy Grail in the 20th century', of which the significance may become
apparent later. It is a story which may at times be susceptible to the
charges of romanticism and naivety, but at the end of the day it was innocent
and that may be very important. It is a story of application, guided or
misguided, by a group of people who, having satisfied themselves that
a certain paranormal or abnormal phenomenon existed, spent the subsequent
years investigating this phenomenon, and continue to do so, examining
every possible source of information in order to explain it. That process
continues, and may always continue.
